Dr. Richard Weisinger

Dr. Richard Weisinger is the Associate Professor, Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering (P/T), La Trobe University, Bundoora, Victoria 3086, Australia and Adjunct Scientist; Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research; San Antonio, Texas, USA.

He has obtained his PhD from University of Washington, Seattle, USA in 1981 and two postdoctoral fellowships from NIMH, Univ. Pittsburgh, USA and NHMRC, Howard Florey Institute, University of Melbourne. He was the NHMRC Senior Research Fellow at the Howard Florey Institute (Ingestive Behaviour team) in 1980 where his research aimed at investigating the mechanisms controlling sodium appetite and thirst, crucial behavioural components of body fluid homeostasis.

In 2005 he moved to School of Psychological Science, La Trobe University. His current research is on the influence of early nutrition, primarily omega-3 fatty acids, on later physiological function and mechanisms involved in the control of body weight and composition which is supported by grants from the ARC. Dr. Richard Weisinger has 178 publications to his credit comprising 147 peer-reviewed original research papers and 31 chapters. He is the first or senior author for 75% of these publications. Many of these original papers are highly cited and appear in journals that are high-impact such as Nature/Nature Medicine (3 papers), Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. (5 papers) and Science (3 papers). He is on the editorial boards of two internationally recognised journals: American Journal of Physiology (Regulatory Integrative Comp. Physiol.) and Physiology and Behavior.
